Reissued! Born in 1968, Arve Henriksen studied at the Trondheim Conservatory from 1987-1991, and has worked as a freelance musician since 1989.

He is without doubt one of Norway's leading instrumentalists and a master of the trumpet, as can be hear on previous solo albums, numerous Supersilent albums and as a side player for musicians such as Trygve Seim, Christian Wallumrod, Dhafer Youssef, David Sylvian and Frode Haltli to name only a few.

On his third album, "Strjon", Arve Henriksen is joined by his Supersilent colleagues Helge Sten and Ståle Storlokken.

Sten has also produced the album. "Strjon" brings together the various sides of Henriksen, from the zen-like solo pieces of his debut album "Sakuteiki" to the open-ended melancholia of "Chiaroscuro" and dark, brooding lyricism of Supersilent.

Henriksen is the extraordinary Norwegian trumpeter whose reinvention of the instrument bridges the worlds of didgeridoo and shakuhachi flute players, and with something like a Sketches of Spain-era Miles Davis feel, even.

This is Henriksen's third album, with Helge Sten on guitars and Stale Storlokken on keyboards, his partners in the innovative electro-improv group Supersilent.

Much of the set sounds more like musical mirroring of changing weather conditions than jazz - the deep, abrasively distorted opening is like a ship's timbers flexing in a storm.

Some of the music features a dreamily isolated Henriksen, some brings slowly flailing rock riffs in behind him, some is spooky, organ-churning Gothic crypt-music, some distantly but tantalisingly, jazzy.

The two-minute title track simply sounds like a distant army on horseback, but there are moments in Glacier Descent and the tender In the Light that suggest that long-gone, lyrical, early Miles Davis sound.

He's in a world of his own, in every sense THE GUARDIAN
