„Graziler Dream-Pop nahe der Perfektion", so urteilte der Musikexpress 2019 über „Happy To Be Here“ des New Yorker Quintetts BARRIE, die sich kurz nach der Veröffentlichung ihres gefeierten Debüts auflösten. Seitdem fungiert BARRIE als Soloprojekt von Sängerin und Songschreiberin Barrie Lindsay.
Nach „Happy To Be Here" folgt mit dem soeben angekündigten Nachfolger „Barbara“ nun ein Album, das eine radikale Transformation einläutet. Texte, die zuvor zwischen melodischen Synthesizern und verschwommenen Backbeats geflüstert wurden, treten nun in den Vordergrund und erzählen sehr persönliche Geschichten von Liebe und Verlust. „Barbara" ist ein zutiefst persönliches Album geworden, das Sängerin Barrie Lindsay nach dem Tod ihres Vaters und inmitten der Liebe zu ihrer jetzigen Frau Gabby geschrieben hat - und das ihre innere Welt mit neuer Kühnheit zum Leben erweckt.
BARRIE kommentiert: "The album is diaristic, but not in obvious or intimate ways. Music is my job, and it’s also intensely personal. I want the music to connect with people, but have reservations about the toll it takes on the artist to have to live up to whatever the music ends up representing for the listener. To connect with people about grief is beautiful, but I don’t want to relive the trauma of it at every show and interview. I also don't want to become desensitized to my sadness. There’s both rawness and a measure of control in the album; I want to make sure the project and the person are tied, but only by certain limbs."
Abseits des Mixings durch Joseph Lorge (PHOEBE BRIDGERS, PERFUME GENIUS) und Masterings durch Patricia Sullivan (MAC MILLER, BLAKE MILLS) wurde „Barbara“ vollständig von BARRIE selbst geschrieben und produziert. Während der Aufnahme des Albums sammelte die Amerikanerin fast ein Dutzend Instrumente (u.a. Zither, Mandoline, Klarinette, Flöte, Cello, Trompete und sogar die Harfe ihrer verstorbenen Großmutter), um das wunderschöne wie eigentümliche Gebräu aus Art-Pop, knackigem Indie-Rock und anschmiegsamen Folk auf „Barbara" zu erschaffen.
Nach den bereits im letzten Jahr veröffentlichten Tracks „Frankie“ und „Dig“ folgt mit „Quarry“ die bereits dritte Single aus dem kommenden Album, über den Lindsey folgendes zu sagen hat: “Quarry is about falling in love in an isolated environment. There’s a surreal quality to the experience, but also explosive joy.”
Barrie Lindsay über „Barbara“:
"Since I wrote, played, and produced the album by myself in isolation, with the help of my wife, it felt like it should be self-titled, but maintain that same sense of separation I achieved with the music. Barbara is my legal name, my formal name. No one calls me Barbara except the bank and the government, and odd occasions when my dad inexplicably introduced me that way to friends. Since my name and moniker are Barrie, calling the album Barbara felt like the fitting way to keep that balance between intimate and public."
