„„Turn Your Body” is loosely about getting married, which I did last year. We actually got sent the mix from Collin, who was mixing the record, the night before the wedding.The video has, basically, nothing to do with that, because that would be silly. Instead, we explored and inserted ourselves into an awkward moment between two people (which I suppose a wedding could be), played here by our friends Darcie Wilder and Suzan Eraslan, who had never met before we filmed. Die Band aus Brooklyn besteht aus Sänger und Gitarrist Travis Johnson, Schlagzeuger Steve Levine und Bassist Jay Heiselmann. Mit „Exit Index“ ist der Nachfolger vom 2015 erschienen „Comb The Feelings Through Your Hair“ am Start. Es ist zudem das erste Album, bei dem die Bandbesetzung gleich geblieben ist.

Auf „Exit Index“ kombiniert die Band das Ende des Pop mit dem Unbehagen des amerikanischen Leben in der heutigen Zeit. Album-Opener „The Directory“ verhüllt sich hierbei in einem Synthie-Nebel, bis Johnson von gespenstischen Harmonien unterstützt, mit zunehmender Intensität fragt: „Where are my millions, my millions, my millions?“ „Dietrich“ baut dagegen auf einer stetigen Bassline auf und Gitarren wirbeln in einem Strudel, während Johnson Versprechungen der Treue macht.

„It's a heavier record than I've ever written lyrics for. I was writing it while I watched every single debate last year—I don't know why I did that to myself—and after my wife would go to sleep, I would stay up with headphones on, recording and making samples—synths and quiet guitar, stuff like that. While I was doing that, I would also be zoning in and out of YouTube, and I was just so freaked out by how the debates were absurd, terrifying things to watch. In a way, I feel like it's a really appropriate record for this time. It feels unintentional, though I wasn't thinking, “I want to soundtrack 2017,” or anything like that. It's hard for me to listen to it now, because I'll listen to it and I'll be like, “God, I wish that this were a fever dream, but it's not.” But that lines up with what's going on in the world, too.” - Travis Johnson

Collin Dupuis (ANGEL OLSEN, LANA DEL REY) gab dem Album den letzen Schliff, wodurch die Sound Struktur noch massiver und imposanter erscheint. Aufgenommen wurde es in dem New Yorker Studio The Magic Shop, kurz bevor das Studio dann im März 2016 geschlossen wurde.

„It was the end. We ended up bashing out 13 or 14 songs - of which we kept 10 - in about six hours, because it was the last day. The engineer was like, “I can't believe it. This is like working on a record in the '60s, where the band comes in and they know everything super well, because they have to. You can hear how locked in we are.” - Travis Johnson

Die Band schafft es, ihre Hooks in einem Mix aus Geschrei und Samples zu umhüllen, deren Texte in aufgewühlter Trauer-Poesie ausgedrückt werden. Das ganze Album ist dabei ein Spiel von Kontrasten: Licht und Dunkelheit trifft auf Verstärker und große Melodien, Spannung gemischt mit Basslines und hartem Rhythmus. „Exit Index“ ist damit ein Porträt des Unbehagens. Seine abstrahierte Poesie und akustische Dunkelheit sind Anlass für eine eingängige, dichte Unruhe.
