In den letzten vier Jahren hat WILLIAMS eine junge Schauspielkarriere geschmiedet und ist ein gefragter Kollaborateur geworden, der erst vor wenigen Wochen an der Seite von LORDE aufgetreten ist. „My Boy” setzt diesen Erfahrungsschatz in ein lebendiges, dynamisches Album um, das so temperamentvoll, komplex und kinetisch ist wie das sich entfaltende Leben seines Interpreten. „I’ve always explored different character elements in my music,” sagt WILLIAMS. „And I think the more I get into acting, the more tricks I’m learning about representation and presentation. I’m trying to make my worlds feed into each other as much as possible. To get braver and bolder with exploring shifting contexts and new ways of doing things.”
Um seine Kapazitäten zu erforschen, hat WILLIAMS sein bisheriges Vermächtnis auf den Kopf gestellt. Statt „My Boy“ mit seiner bewährten, langjährigen Begleitband THE YARRA BENDERS aufzunehmen, nahm WILLIAMS die Hälfte des Albums mit Mark 'Merk' Perkins auf, bevor er Ende 2020 mit Produzent Tom Healy (TINY RUINS, THE CHILLS) und einer neuen Besetzung in Neil Finns Roundhead-Studios in Auckland aufnahm: Der in LA lebende Schlagzeuger Paul Taylor (FEIST), Bassist Cass Basil (LADYHAWKE, TINY RUINS), Healy an den Gitarren und Synthesizern sowie Auftritte von Delaney Davidson, Dave Kahn (der einzige YARRA BENDER auf dem Album) und Elroy Finn an Schlagzeug und Percussion. „Having new personalities in the room allowed me to escape myself,” sagt WILLIAMS. „When everyone’s still working out each other’s roles, there’s an unsettling and exciting tendency to go off in different directions.”
